Penn State wrestling: Some clarity on 125, 149 pound classes - Centre Daily Times

It seems like forever since Penn State’s wrestlers have been on the mat.

For eight Nittany Lions, they last competed Dec. 16-17 in the US Senior Nationals in Fort Worth, Texas. The rest of the team either took part in the Hofstra dual on Dec. 10, Lehigh dual on Dec. 3 or in tournaments in November. In other words, Penn State hasn’t wrestled much during this holiday season.

For the past several years, Penn State has been trying to figure out who will be its starter at 125 pounds. After the announcement of Shayne Van Ness being out the reminder of the season, the Nittany Lions now have another spot at 149 pounds to worry about.

On Tuesday, coach Cael Sanderson seemed to bring a little clarity to plans for those weight classes.

“We’re going to keep playing with both weights. I think (Braeden) Davis has done a really good job,” he said. “(1)49, we’re probably going to have one of the guys that were down at (1)41. We’ll be competitive, ready to roll and just kind of get those matches as they come, and see where we are at. We feel pretty good.”

Penn State’s Braeden Davis looks to finish off a takedown of teammate Gary Steen in their final match of the day during the Journeymen Collegiate Classic on Sunday at Freedom High School in Bethlehem. Davis beat Steen, 11-3.

Davis has been competing alongside of Gary Steen and Robert Howard at 125 pounds.

Steen started the first dual of the year against Lehigh, an individual 4-1 loss, but Davis got his shot at starting against Hofstra and made the most of it. Davis earned an 11-2 major decision that drew high praise from Sanderson at the time.

Davis is 8-0 on the year and is the lone undefeated wrestler of the three at the weight. He’s also collected six bonus point victories of those eight.

The true freshman topped Steen, 11-3, in the Journeymen Collegiate Classic in November. He also has wins over talented wrestlers such as Army’s Ethan Bergnic and Michigan State’s Tristan Lujan.

One would think that Davis would be the guy going forward.

When it comes to 149 pounds, Sanderson said the plan is to have one of the wrestlers at 141 behind Beau Bartlett bump up.

Some of those guys include Tyler Kasak and David Evans, whom Sanderson mentioned on Tuesday.

“We’ll see as they compete at (1)49. Kasak has already wrestled for us (at 149),” Sanderson said. “Evans and Kasak have competed really well up to this point. They’re probably more natural (1)49-pounders. I don’t think weight will be an issue for them. They’ll be ready to wrestle.”

Both wrestlers have competed in a dual, with Evans collecting a 19-4 technical fall over Hofstra’s Alex Turley at 141 pounds. Kasak got the nod in the Lehigh dual, where he earned a 7-5 victory over Drew Munch.

Kasak was also supposed to compete at the US Senior Nationals, but didn’t get a chance to hit the mat.

Status update on Kerkvliet

Like Kasak, Greg Kerkvliet was supposed to compete at US Senior Nationals, and even garnered the No. 2 seed.

When the tournament got underway, Kerkvliet wasn’t in the bracket.

“Lingering from his injury against Lehigh, it just didn’t make sense to jump into a big tournament. It was kind of like last-day-kind-of-decision,” Sanderson said. “He’s doing well, and ready to rock ‘n’ roll this weekend.”
